Hundreds of demonstrators have been arrested in the last 24 hours as protests decrying Israel's bombardment of Gaza continue at university campuses across the nation. The majority of demonstrations have called for the divestment from companies that support Israel and the war in Gaza. Meanwhile, at the University of Arizona, law enforcement used pepper balls and rubber bullets against protesters Wednesday, the university said in a statement. The Los Angeles Police Department has also issued a city-wide "tactical alert" related to a pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA, a law enforcement source told CNN. University of Texas at Dallas: At least 17 arrests have been made at the campus as of Wednesday evening, school officials said.

But this week, investigators finally revealed her identity: Patricia Kathleen McGlone, a 16-year-old who lived in Brooklyn. NYPDInvestigators believe Patricia was killed in late 1969 or early 1970 and buried in the basement of the building. With advanced forensics, they determined her parents’ identity and where they lived in Brooklyn, and scoured through local public documents. Decades earlier, around the time Patricia was believed to have been killed, the building housed a nightclub called The Scene, Glas said. The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office determined in 2003 that the skeleton belonged to a teenage girl who stood 5-foot-2.

At the University of California, Los Angeles, student journalists reporting on violent clashes between protesters said they were assaulted and gassed. On some college campuses rocked by the demonstrations, access has been restricted to students only, effectively making student journalists the only reliable news media reporting on the campus protests and clashes. Student Editor Anna Dai-Liu told CNN that she was gassed, and other student reporters were assaulted, with one reporter being taken to emergency care. “Student journalists have a unique and essential role on their campuses in observing and disseminating news,” said Gary Green, executive director of the Student Press Law Center. Jelani Cobb, dean of the Columbia Journalism School, also applauded student journalists for their reporting on the campus protests.

University of Pennsylvania president Liz Magill and Harvard University president Claudine Gay both stepped down in the wake of pressure over their response to antisemitism on campus. Protesters continue to maintain the encampment on Columbia University campus on April 24 in New York City, after a tense night of negotiations. Caitlin Ochs/ReutersColumbia University said it has extended negotiations with student activists over the dismantling of the pro-Palestinian encampment that has cast its campus into days of turmoil, a spokesperson for the school said. The statement came just hours after Columbia’s president announced it had given protesters a midnight deadline to reach an agreement or the university would consider “alternative options” to clear the encampment. The talks will now be extended another 48 hours after “important progress” was made, the spokesperson said. As the protests stretch into their eighth day, Columbia President Minouche Shafik has faced numerous calls from donors and lawmakers who believe police should be brought in to clear the encampment and restore order on campus – even as students and faculty are condemning the president’s similar decision last week to ask the New York Police Department to clear another student encampment.

New York CNN —Columbia University student organizers were given a midnight deadline Tuesday to resolve talks with the university over dismantling the pro-Palestinian encampment that has cast its campus into days of turmoil and unease, the school’s president said. Though the outcome of the negotiations is still unclear, Columbia President Minouche Shafik said the university would consider “alternative options” if no agreement was reached by midnight. As of 12:10 a.m., the NYPD had not been asked by Columbia University to respond to the campus, a police spokesperson told CNN. Harvard University has closed Harvard Yard and officials at the university suspended a pro-Palestinian student organization for allegedly violating school policies. The encampment at Columbia University was lively early this week, with many students congregating in circles, eating and talking.

CNN —A rabbi associated with Columbia University’s Orthodox Union Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus recommended that Jewish students “return home as soon as possible and remain home” amid ongoing protests denouncing the war in Gaza and demanding the university divest from Israel. Recent events at the university “have made it clear that Columbia University’s Public Safety and the NYPD cannot guarantee Jewish students’ safety,” Buechler wrote in the message. By contrast, the campus Hillel said in a Sunday post on X that they “do not believe that Jewish students should leave” the campus. “Columbia students organizing in solidarity with Palestine – including Jewish students – have faced harassment, doxxing, and now arrest by the NYPD. A man who set himself on fire Friday outside the courthouse where former President Donald Trump's hush money trial is taking place has died, New York City police said early Saturday. The man, whom police identified as Maxwell Azzarello of St. Augustine, Florida, was in the designated protest area outside. It appeared to happen around the time that the jury for Trump's trial was fully empaneled — with 12 jurors and six alternates selected to sit for a trial that's expected to last about six weeks. It occurred just before the court took a lunch break. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Azzarello was born in 1987 and arrived in New York City earlier in the week.

The man who lit himself on fire outside of the Manhattan courthouse where Donald Trump’s trial was taking place died Friday night, a senior law enforcement official told CNN. NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey B. Maddrey said earlier that the man walked into the center of Collect Pond Park, which is directly across from the courthouse. He opened his backpack and took out pamphlets that he scattered in the park before setting himself on fire. The man was taken to Cornell Burn Center earlier in critical condition. Police had said they thought it was not likely that he would survive.
